About this coffee

Bali Robusta from Pupuan is a natural-processed Robusta with a Geographical Indication certificate (Sertifikat Indikasi Geografis). It grows on the volcanic slopes of Pupuan in Tabanan Regency, Bali, at 500 to 900 m. The certificate names Pupuan as the origin and recognises the traditional growing methods used there.

The beans are greyish-green and evenly sized. The extra-large beans are selected for uniformity and make ELB Grade 2 and 3. The medium beans that are left over are processed into EK-1 Grade 3 and 4, also with uniform bean sizes.

The growing area is narrow, so the harvest is small. Cultivation often involves traditional smallholder farmers. The figures on this page come from the producer's fact sheet.

Tasting notes

Full-bodied, with earthy and nutty notes. The aroma is slightly woody with a hint of spice. The acidity is balanced and the aftertaste lingers.

How it is processed

Pupuan Robusta is processed naturally, the traditional dry method. The whole cherry is dried in the sun with the fruit still on the bean, then hulled. Drying with the fruit on adds to the body and aroma of the cup.

The main harvest runs from July to October and peaks in August.
