About this coffee

Bali Kintamani Arabica Grade 1 is a semi-washed green coffee from the Mount Batur highlands in Bangli Regency, Bali. The trees grow at 1,100 to 1,600 m. The varieties are primarily S795, Typica and Catimor. The beans are dark green, screen size 15 to 19, with 12 to 13% moisture. Production is limited.

The volcanic soil is mineral-rich and drains well. According to the producer, the altitude slows the ripening of the cherry, which gives denser beans with concentrated sugars.

Grade 1 is the Indonesian SNI grade: at most 11 defects per 300 g. The figures on this page come from the producer's fact sheet.

Tasting notes

Citrus, dark chocolate, herbal and floral. Bright orange and lemon, with jasmine and orange blossom, and hints of lemongrass and ginger. The acidity is bright and citrus-driven, medium to high. The body is medium and round, the sweetness moderate, and the aftertaste clean and lingering.

How it is processed

Kintamani is semi-washed, known in Indonesia as giling basah. The parchment is hulled while the bean is still moist, then dried.

The harvest runs from April to September and peaks from June to August.

Questions buyers ask

What does semi-washed (giling basah) mean for Kintamani coffee?

Semi-washed means the parchment is hulled while the bean is still moist, before it is fully dried. Bali Kintamani Arabica is processed this way, which is the usual Indonesian method.

Is Kintamani Grade 1 an SCA grade?

No. Bali Kintamani Arabica Grade 1 is graded under the Indonesian SNI standard: at most 11 defects per 300 g. The SCA counts defects per 350 g, so the two numbers can't be compared directly.

What does Bali Kintamani Arabica taste like?

Bali Kintamani Arabica tastes of citrus, dark chocolate, herbs and flowers. Think orange and lemon, jasmine and orange blossom. The acidity is bright and citrus-driven, the body is medium and round, and the aftertaste is clean.

How is Kintamani different from Toraja?

Kintamani is bright and citrusy, with a medium body. Toraja Arabica is earthy and full-bodied, with dark chocolate, tobacco and a low, smooth acidity. Many Indonesian coffees are heavy and earthy, and Kintamani is the lighter, cleaner alternative.

When is Kintamani coffee harvested?

Bali Kintamani Arabica is harvested from April to September, with the peak from June to August.
